Europe’s largest urban art festival Upfest is taking a break this year and will once again descend onto the streets of South Bristol in 2015. However you can still join Nacoa and our Upfest friends at the North Street Summer Fair on 14th June 2014. More details to follow!
Last year’s Upfest boasted an impressive international line up of over 300 artists over some 2 miles of the city.
The bank holiday weekend at the end of May saw the gathering of Nacoa volunteers, far and near, for our annual Upfest pilgrimage. This year we were blessed with glorious sunshine from start to finish and the crowds flocked to enjoy over 30,000 square feet of artwork being created live.
In addition to promoting the city’s vast and diverse artistic heritage, Upfest provides us with an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for Nacoa, with our volunteers, plus their friends and families all getting involved in the carnival like atmosphere.
As in previous years, our volunteers helped marshal the event, looking dashing in their high viz jackets and selling festival programmes (with all proceeds coming direct to Nacoa). We again hosted the ever popular children’s area complete with face painting and a flea market and vintage jewellery stall. Our cake stalls were bigger and better than ever, with an abundance of homemade cakes and sweet goods all kindly donated by volunteers. The addition of the Nacoa refreshment tent on North Street Green helped us engage more with the public, talking about the often hidden topic of parental alcohol problems.
This year also saw us with our very own Nacoa buskers helping us raise money by entertaining the public with a selection of tunes. The superb weather just added that extra ingredient to make this one of the best Upfest’s so far.
Upfest is a free festival, only made possible by the hard work of many Upfest and Nacoa volunteers. Over the weekend, 55 Nacoa volunteers gave nearly 800 hours and and helped us raise an impressive £5565. Many thanks to one and all!
