Nacoa was privileged to welcome the Children’s Commissioner for England, Dr Maggie Atkinson, to our office on Thursday 18 October.

Hilary Henriques, our CEO, invited Maggie to visit us following the valuable contribution from Nacoa volunteers into the production of the Children’s Commissioners report “Silent Voices” published in September. This was a very insightful report into the negative effects on the lives and wellbeing of children due to parental alcohol misuse.

“Children of parents whose drinking is problematic always need, but don’t always get, support and a listening ear. Organisations like Nacoa are of immense value. They provide support and really understand what a child’s life is like when the weight of adults’ drinking is too great for them to carry. This is just what children with parents who abused alcohol reported to me when they worked with us early this year.” Dr Maggie Atkinson, Children’s Commissioner for England.

We were also joined on the day by the Office of the Children’s Commissioner’s Principal Policy Advisor, Jenny Clifton, and one of the report’s researchers, Laura Templeton. The visit provided an opportunity for them to meet some of our volunteers and trustees and see the important work carried out at Nacoa.
