I’ve had a really tough weekend with an alcoholic parent. I’m in my 30s and back home visiting my parent, they’ve had a longstanding drinking problem but it’d often go through waves. I was home for a family event at their house for them, a small gathering as crowds make them anxious and drink more. They were secretly drinking and began to say weird things to family friends there, they then passed out on a settee ahead of a the family meal. When the family meal was being served for the remaining small group, my parent messed themselves terribly whilst upstairs which I immediately had to help tidy up. I was absolutely horrified and upset and couldn’t stop crying after.

This is the worst it’s been, but the drink every single day to blackout and then some. I wondered why I made the effort for them. But also Should I call their GP? I’ve confronted them many times with other family members and I’m scared they are going to die.

I’ve honestly felt awful since, and it’s brought up some horrible feels as I never want to end up like that. My partner reassures me that I’m not similar but you just worry about genetics.

It’s really taken a toll on work this week and I haven’t spoken to the parent since the incident
