The demon…..

The demon lies deep deep within
When it’s out and about it fills the bottle bin

The demon is a horrible illness of health
Trying to destroy it? There is not enough wealth!

The demon is very good at playing hide and seek
Sucking the soul out of you, making you extremely weak.

The demon will turn you against the ones you love
Telling you to get out the way with push and a shove

The demon is dark and a liar at best
Will use the couch or park, just anywhere to rest

The demon will drive all night & all day
Stop with a bottle of vodka in a car park bay.

When the demon comes out the the fear is real
Anxiety and sadness for the family to feel

When the demon comes out, they go missing for days
“It will be alright” that’s what everyone says

When the demon is there they let go of life
Find them in danger, to the point of holding a knife.

The police are called and they end up in a cell
This demon really is from the gates of hell.

When the demon is here the ambulance will save
Always scared the next step is a 6ft grave

On the couch is where the demon will sleep
The pain when you look at them is oh so deep!

Looks right through you as though “who is that”
Little do they know You just picked them up off the mat.

3 cans 4 cans 5 cans or more
The more is better just so they dont leave that front door!

Missing for days, sometimes a week
Trying to live everyday life and just trying to speak.

Family can carry this demon, deep deep within
It is called an alcoholic, Who knows when they wants a gin.

You stand by them and would never turn your back
But You do sometimes think “life, give me some slack”

They can shout at you all they want, even give you a scream
nothing will stop you trying to get them sober, that is your dream!

But…when the demon is not there, You love them Don’t you
They are the best grandma, mother or even a sister too.

They are strong & loving and would do anything for you & me!
There is such a tight bond like the Manchester bee!

You HATE this demon with all your will!
You hate how it makes your family extremely ill.

The demon can GO AWAY and never come back
Your family are happy now, please give them some slack!

Hi, thank you so much for sharing this poem :) I am impressed with how you managed to keep the rhyming going the whole way through! I think your words are really helpful in showing how the whole family can be affected by someone's drinking - something which can be hard to get across but you've done really well.

I hope you are keeping well, and thanks again for sharing your lovely poem. Please do share more if you would like and it helps.
    SK
