Scott Murdoch Takes on the Marathon des Sables for Nacoa
This week, on 4th April, incredible Nacoa volunteer Scott Murdoch will take on one of the most gruelling endurance events in the world—the Marathon des Sables. All to raise awareness and support for children affected by their parent’s drinking.
Known as the “toughest footrace on Earth,” the Marathon des Sables sees competitors traverse over 250 kilometres of the Sahara Desert in extreme temperatures, carrying everything they need to survive on their backs. For Scott, this mammoth challenge is more than just a physical feat—it’s deeply personal.
From scapegoat to sand runner
Scott knows all too well the emotional toll that parental alcohol problems can cause. In his personal piece for Nacoa, he wrote:
“You know you’ve had a unique upbringing when you’ve had prolonged exposure to situations you should never have had to navigate as a child, and everyone around you pretends that it’s normal. I was the only one in our house who didn’t drink. I was also the only one being told I had a problem.”
Scott shares how, despite being failed by many of the adults around him, he’s determined to help ensure no child feels as isolated as he once did.
Backed by Scotwork
With the backing of his employers Scotwork, who are supporting him every step of the way, Scott has undergone a rigorous training regime. This includes working closely with Edinburgh Napier University on a specialised strength and conditioning programme. Preparing for the desert heat is tough work. Scott has even trained in a controlled heat chamber to simulate the soaring temperatures he’ll face in the Sahara.
Scott’s inspiring mission recently caught the attention of STV. He spoke about both the immense physical challenge. And his hope to shine a light on the millions of children suffering in silence. His message: children deserve to be seen, heard, and helped.
A Nacoa first!
Everyone at Nacoa is proud beyond words of Scott and his incredible dedication. As he races across the desert, he’ll be carrying more than just survival gear.
